MC Design & Contracting

MC Design was incorporated in 1990, when the founder and then chairman, Manie Steyn, envisioned a company that would be services-oriented at its core, providing complete engineering solutions for diverse industries. The company’s first project was an extensive engineering project for General Motors (formerly known as Delta Motor Corporation). The brief was concise: “Design, manufacture and install all facilities for the new model vehicle, with good quality workmanship and on-time delivery.” Meeting all the requirements, the MC Design team rose to the challenge through the application of sound engineering practises incorporating design, manufacturing and installation. Since 1990, MC Design has executed many projects at General Motors and the company has been the benefactor of five GM Supplier of the Year Awards.

At the outset, the idea of MC Design was as a ‘design house’ that would subcontract all of its engineering production and installation services. Quality considerations led to the revision of this model and, in 1993, a decision was made to obtain premises, invest in equipment and recruit personnel that would enable the company to do in-house manufacturing.

In 1996, MC Design’s service contribution was again expanded with the commissioning of a new division. The addition of the electrical and automation division increased the company’s capacity further, enabling the company to ensure a high quality service delivery.

In the short span of six years, the company grew from a design house – occupying a mere 400m2 of office space - to become a comprehensive project engineering company with a 3000m2 production facility. Amongst other new service additions, this up-sizing meant the inclusion of a sheet metal workshop, a medium-to-heavy fabrication workshop as well as an electrical workshop.

Since the successful completion of that first project for General Motors, MC Design has completed numerous multimillion rand projects, for major clients in diversified fields.

  • various Body Shop facilities for General Motors
  • extensions to the Assembly Plant for Daimler Chrysler
  • development of the Motor Assembly Plant for Hyundai, in Botswana
  • establishment of the Catalytic Production Plant for Umicore
  • establishment of the Catalytic Production Plant for BASF
  • establishment of the Chemical Production Plant for Heraeus Chemicals
  • establishment of the Extraction Plant for Heraeus Refinery
  • design and installation of the Chilled Water Facility Piping for ASPEN Pharmacare
  • establishment of the Air Seperation Plant of Linde, in Coega

With each new project, MC Design re-establishes itself as the service-provider for comprehensive turnkey solutions, exceeding industry standards, with impeccable on-time delivery.

In 2005, Manie Steyn – until then the sole Director and Shareholder of MC Design entered into a management buy-out with some of the company’s senior employees. A new Board of Directors was appointed, with Manie Steyn remaining as non-executive chairman until 2015.

Today, the Board of Directors includes Ettiene Steyn and Reg Evans and the company employs in excess of 150 employees and has the infrastructure, facilities and technology to effectively facilitate projects in the fields of mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. MC Design continues to provide clients with the time-honoured comprehensive and professional solutions that have come to be expected, with exceeding industry standards and on-time delivery guaranteed.
